We are Consciousness that is outside of time and space. I cannot prove this to a materialist, but if not, then forever life extension is impossible in geologic time scales, much less galactic time scales. It is an egotistical mental illness. Death will come. The entire Cosmos will collapse into Black holes and regenerate.
--: Longer life by finding optimal biologic options is an ongoing pursuit and we live longer, on average, than our ancestors did. Even if the brain remains supple, how much memory can a person hold in mentally available space and psychologically? We continually reinvent ourselves throughout our lives and our memories become less accurate. I believe that after a while life would become empty, meaningless, and tiring. Note that memory is not understood and has dimensional components beyond 3-D space.
--: Upload into a machine? Can the consciousness move into Virtual Reality without a body? Read, "Love, Dharma, and the Galaxy" for a realistic perspective on what it would be like if successful in the distant future. Current level of tech and anything uploaded is just a data set for AI to consume, no free will to choose and act (no Spirit) - just dead data.
Escapist Philosophies are not the Way. Human beings are biology integrated and entangled with the Biosphere. If the biosphere collapses, the human species goes extinct sooner than our true psychic potential is realized and embraced. Para-psychological research has proven we are psychic, just not very good at it. We have huge potential to evolve with natural biology.
The Cosmos has ultimate creativity. Why would ET have interest in our genome when they can design anything they want? The Cosmos has an innate sacred geometry which can do better at evolving the quintessential qualities than any species of even than ancient intergalactic AI.
Thank you for addressing important intellectual concerns.
Thanks for this. As per the Immortalists, a small critique on that--- I don't know that we "should"extend life indefinitely, but if there are ways to naturally live much longer than most people believe, if feels right that at a minimum people "should" be aware of this possibility, granting them a sort of informed consent. If everyone could live to 700, that doesn't mean we should force them. But right now most people's POV involves taking a digit off that number.
These are solely materialist perspectives--all still beliefs.
"No! I really know what's real, look at how this shadow and that shadow interact, there's my evidence. This is proof of how the real world really is! You're wrong, Plato, I believe nothing!"
Others may believe in an unknown but assured future with a version of us in it--w/o much specification.
Surprisingly, we take the old world from behind us, mold it like clay using our beliefs and resources into the world around us. "Save the planet!" Cheers and sneers--neither consider the people on it. Nobody says, "who hurt the planet?" But, their reality comes from the programs that have been loaded into their niche cortices.
You mention in your previous books Plato's Cave, where perceived reality lacks understanding.
There's a chance Plato's Cave is a Matryoshka (Russian) doll, and realities are nested.
There's a chance realities are projections and no living creature shares the same reality.
Touchpoints exist... date night, Church with the kids, Family gatherings, etc.
There will be a messy future where cyborgs begin to look less-and-less like a human.
Or, Androids start to behave more and more like a human.
People are going to morph mentally as they bond, increasingly, with their superintelligence-selves.
And one day, they will consider their fleshy portion less important and more of a hinderance.
Uploading is far in the future, but this transhumanist sci-fi/fantasy is going to be our transition from a natural society, to a humanity with uncertain futures.
